托福阅读有三层必须要跨过去的台阶：词汇、句子、段落。
很多同学在历经九九八十一难迈过了词汇这道难关之后，发现原来自己只是打了一个小boss。让文章变得又臭又长和晦涩难懂的除了各种生僻词汇以及熟词僻义，还有一眼望不到头的句子。这些句子困扰着很多同学，不知道如何处理。具体困惑表现为：句子太长了看得头疼；这么长一句话、这么多信息，搞不明白作者到底想要说啥；句子太长了看到后面都已经忘了前面说了什么了。
因此学习如何处理长难句是我们在托福阅读方面提分的重要手段。未来的文章系列我们会一起来梳理托福阅读中有代表性的长难句，通过分析这些长难句来为我们的篇章/段落阅读速度打好基础

托福长难句第一句解析
Admittedly, it is easy to underestimate the value of material elicited by oral historians who investigate preliterate societies.
这一句的难点在于：过去分词做修饰；形式主语句型；定语从句。
难度系数：⭐⭐
在具体拆解这一句子之前，我们首先要了解什么是分词做修饰。分词做修饰是指使用一个动词的过去分词或者现在分词来修饰某一个名词或者为整个句子补充原因、条件、让步等信息。
比如：
修饰某一个名词：
A changed situation.
改变了的情况。
A changing situation.
正在发生改变的情况。
the car parked outside.
停在外面的那辆车。
the students sitting in the classroom.
坐在教室里的学生。
为整个句子补充信息：
Given enough time, we can solve the problem.
如果给我们足够的时间，我们能解决这个问题。
Feeling tired, I decided to go to bed early.
因为觉得累，我决定早点睡。
了解完分词做修饰的形式和功能后，我们再来看这个句子。
第一步：识别修饰成分
Admittedly, it is easy to underestimate the value of material elicited by oral historians who investigate preliterate societies.
观察句子能够发现，其中存在一个过去分词做修饰的部分，即elicited by oral historians，修饰前面的名词material。
此外还存在一个who引导的定语从句，修饰historians.
第二步：识别主干
把所有的修饰成分去掉之后，我们就能够比较快地识别出句子的主干是：
Admittedly, it is easy to underestimate the value of material elicited by oral historians who investigate preliterate societies.
需要注意的是，这句话的主干是一个形式主语句型，it为形式主语，真正的主语是to underestimate the value of material。
第三步：理解全句
拆解完修饰成分之后，我们再来有主次地理解全句内容：
诚然，人们往往会低估那些由研究前文字社会的口述历史学家所获取的材料的价值。
托福长难句第二句解析
They are composed of documents drawn up or used in the course of an administrative or executive transaction of which they had formed a part.
难度系数：⭐⭐
我们继续按照上述思路分析这一句子。
第一步：识别修饰成分
They are composed of documents drawn up or used in the course of an administrative or executive transaction of which they had formed a part.
观察句子能够发现，其中存在两个过去分词做修饰的部分，即drawn up和used，修饰前面的名词documents。
此外还存在一个定语从句，of which they had formed a part，修饰前面的名词transaction。
第二步：识别主干
把所有的修饰成分去掉之后，我们就能够比较快地识别出句子的主干是：
They are composed of documents drawn up or used in the course of an administrative or executive transaction of which they had formed a part.
第三步：理解全句
拆解完修饰成分之后，我们再来有主次地理解全句内容：
它们由在行政或执行事务过程中起草或使用的文件构成，这些文件是该事务的组成部分。
托福长难句第三句解析
Modern historians writing the history of Africa not only face problems similar to those experienced by their colleagues writing the history of other cultures.
难度系数：⭐⭐
第一步：识别修饰成分
Modern historians writing the history of Africa not only face problems similar to those experienced by their colleagues writing the history of other cultures.
与上述句子不同的是，这里同时出现了过去分词做修饰以及现在分词做修饰，分别是 writing the history of Africa 修饰 modern historians、experienced by their colleagues修饰those，以及writing the history of other cultures修饰their colleagues。
第二步：识别主干
把所有的修饰成分去掉之后，我们就能够比较快地识别出句子的主干是：
Modern historians writing the history of Africa not only face problems similar to those experienced by their colleagues writing the history of other cultures.
第三步：理解全句
拆解完修饰成分之后，我们再来有主次地理解全句内容：
撰写非洲历史的现代历史学家不仅面临着与撰写其他文化历史的同行相似的问题。
